What is El Silbo Gomero?
(Whistlers' Show)

El Silbo Gomero is a unique whistling language used on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands. This language was developed to communicate over long distances in the mountainous regions, where normal speech is not audible. The whistling language mimics the phonetic elements of the Spanish language, using whistles to express different syllables and words.

The "language" was originally developed among the native Guanche people and adapted to the Spanish language after colonization. El Silbo Gomero is an endangered language, but efforts are being made to preserve it. It was included in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, recognizing its unique value and cultural significance. In schools on La Gomera, children are taught the basics of the whistling language as part of their cultural education to ensure its continued existence.
